Your Garden Room
In the UK, the term ‘garden room’ often refers to a glass extension – which may be built of
uPVC,
timber or
aluminium – with a solid, flat, one-piece roof that is usually made from glass-reinforced plastic (GRP), complete with integral guttering.
Such a roof is ideal for single-storey properties and its construction, which eliminates the need for roof blinds, is likely to make your room cooler in the summer while offering better insulation and a warmer environment during the winter.
Alternatively, a pitched roof with separate guttering may be added on top of the flat roof and finished in tiles or slates to match the rest of your property.
Garden rooms are typically a ‘four seasons room’, meaning they can be enjoyed every day of the year, even if they receive less sun because they face north or east, thanks to having:
an insulated:
• dwarf brick wall
• roof
high quality double-glazing, ie:
• constructed from 25mm polycarbonate, with six skins and reinforced webbing
• low-emission (‘low-e’, ie energy-efficient) glass with a microscopic metal coating that allows through short wave radiation, eg sunlight, but which reflects long wave radiation, eg heat from radiators, with the trapped warmth reducing condensation.
