Large span structures

Swimming pool enclosures and other large structures

Most conservatory roof systems can span up to five or six metres without the need for sub-structural support, although will require tie bars in the roof: this would be able to house a small spa or exercise pool but nothing bigger. A more sizeable enclosure is known as a large span structure.

Any large span structure needs a supporting sub-structure, which is usually made from structural grade aluminium or, less frequently, timber. It will represent a significant portion of the overall cost due to excavation work and the need to be:

• secured to the surrounding ground
• verified by structural engineers.

In response to increased demand for larger conservatories, suppliers have developed cheaper larger span structures known as mini portals that remove the need to use the ‘portal frames’ that are generally associated with commercial enclosures.
